Whenever I start questioning my marketing budget, I go back to a story I heard about William Wrigley Jr., the chewing gum magnate.

He was travelling by train to a business meeting with his assistant and suggested that it would be a great idea to review the advertising budget. The assistant commented that he didn’t understand why they were advertising at all. After all, Wrigley sold more chewing gum than everyone on the planet put together.

Wrigley thought for a moment and then asked how fast the train was going. The assistant replied that it was likely about 40 miles an hour. “So why do they keep putting coal in the engine?” was Wrigley’s response.

With the absolute need for marketing now established, the question becomes are great marketing campaigns the product of genius marketing minds or are they the result of taking action on a great idea?
